What is a Shape?

A shape is the outline or form of an object. When we talk about 2D shapes (two-dimensional), we mean flat shapes like the ones you can draw on paper.

Let's learn the most common shapes!

Circle

A circle is perfectly round.

  • No corners (also called vertices)
  • No straight sides
  • Every point on the edge is the same distance from the center

Examples in real life:

  • A clock face
  • A pizza
  • A wheel
  • A coin

Square

A square has four equal sides and four corners.

  • 4 sides (all the same length)
  • 4 corners (all are right angles, like the corner of a book)
  • All sides are straight

Examples in real life:

  • A cracker
  • A chess board square
  • A sticky note
  • A window pane

Rectangle

A rectangle looks like a stretched square.

  • 4 sides (opposite sides are the same length)
  • 4 corners (all right angles)
  • Longer than it is wide (or wider than it is long)

Examples in real life:

  • A door
  • A book
  • A smartphone screen
  • A dollar bill

Note: A square is a special type of rectangle where all sides happen to be equal!

Triangle

A triangle has three sides and three corners.

  • 3 straight sides
  • 3 corners

Triangles come in different types, but they all have three sides.

Examples in real life:

  • A slice of pizza
  • A "yield" road sign
  • The roof of a house
  • A musical triangle instrument

Other Common Shapes

Pentagon — 5 sides and 5 corners (think of the Pentagon building)

Hexagon — 6 sides and 6 corners (like a honeycomb cell)

Octagon — 8 sides and 8 corners (like a stop sign)

Properties of Shapes

Each shape has special properties — features that make it unique.

ShapeSidesCornersSpecial Property
Circle00Perfectly round; all points equidistant from center
Triangle33Simplest polygon; angles add to 180°
Square44All sides equal; all angles 90°
Rectangle44Opposite sides equal; all angles 90°
Pentagon55Five-sided polygon
Hexagon66Six-sided polygon
Octagon88Eight-sided polygon

Polygons

A polygon is any closed shape made of straight lines.

  • Triangles, squares, rectangles, pentagons, hexagons, and octagons are all polygons
  • Circles are not polygons (they have no straight sides)

Classifying Shapes by Sides

Shapes are often named by how many sides they have:

  • Tri- means 3 → Triangle (3 sides)
  • Quad- means 4 → Quadrilateral (4 sides)
  • Penta- means 5 → Pentagon (5 sides)
  • Hexa- means 6 → Hexagon (6 sides)
  • Octa- means 8 → Octagon (8 sides)

A quadrilateral is any four-sided shape. Squares and rectangles are both special types of quadrilaterals!

Symmetry in Shapes

Many shapes have symmetry — you can fold them in half and both sides match perfectly.

  • A circle has infinite lines of symmetry
  • A square has 4 lines of symmetry
  • A rectangle has 2 lines of symmetry
  • An equilateral triangle (all sides equal) has 3 lines of symmetry

We will learn more about symmetry later.
