For Elementary Students

What Is Perimeter?

Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape!

Think about it like this: Imagine walking all the way around the edge of a playground. The total distance you walk is the perimeter!

The Easy Way to Remember

Perimeter = Add up ALL the sides

That's it! Just add the length of every side together!

Rectangle

A rectangle has 4 sides: 2 long sides and 2 short sides.

    8 cm
  ┌──────┐
5 │ │ 5 cm
  │ │
  └──────┘
    8 cm

To find perimeter: Add all four sides!

  • Long side: 8 cm
  • Short side: 5 cm
  • Long side: 8 cm
  • Short side: 5 cm

Perimeter: 8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26 cm

Quick trick: Since opposite sides are equal:

  • Perimeter = 2 × 8 + 2 × 5 = 16 + 10 = 26 cm

Square

A square has 4 equal sides!

  ┌────┐
  │ │ 6 cm each side
  │ │
  └────┘

To find perimeter: Add all four sides!

  • 6 + 6 + 6 + 6 = 24 cm

Quick trick: Multiply one side by 4!

  • Perimeter = 4 × 6 = 24 cm

Triangle

A triangle has 3 sides.

     /\
    / \
  5/ \4
  / \
 /________\
     3

To find perimeter: Add all three sides!

  • Perimeter = 3 + 4 + 5 = 12 cm

Real-Life Perimeter

Fence around a yard: How much fencing do you need? Calculate the perimeter!

Frame for a picture: How much wood do you need? Calculate the perimeter!

Running around a field: How far did you run? The perimeter!

Remember the Units!

Perimeter is a distance, so use distance units:

  • Centimeters (cm)
  • Meters (m)
  • Inches (in)
  • Feet (ft)

Always include the unit in your answer!

✓ "The perimeter is 20 cm" ❌ "The perimeter is 20"

For Junior High Students

What Is Perimeter?

The perimeter is the total distance around the outside edge of a two-dimensional shape. It's the sum of all the side lengths.

Etymology: "Peri" means around, "meter" means measure → measuring around

Key concept: Perimeter measures the boundary of a shape.

Imagine walking along the edge of a field — the perimeter is how far you walk to get all the way around.

How to Find Perimeter

General rule: Add up the lengths of all the sides.

Formula (general): P = sum of all side lengths

Rectangle

A rectangle has two pairs of equal sides: length (l) and width (w).

      l
  ┌────────┐
w │ │ w
  │ │
  └────────┘
      l

Formula: Perimeter = 2 × length + 2 × width

Or: P = 2(l + w) or P = 2l + 2w

Example: A rectangle with length 8 cm and width 5 cm.

Method 1: Add all sides

  • P = 8 + 5 + 8 + 5 = 26 cm

Method 2: Use formula

  • P = 2(8 + 5) = 2 × 13 = 26 cm

Both methods give the same answer!

Square

A square has four equal sides (s).

    s
  ┌───┐
s │ │ s
  │ │
  └───┘
    s

Formula: Perimeter = 4 × side or P = 4s

Example: A square with side 6 m.

  • P = 4 × 6 = 24 m

Why it works: A square has 4 equal sides, so we multiply the side length by 4.

Triangle

A triangle has three sides, which we'll call a, b, and c.

      b
    /\
   / \
  / \
a/ \c
/________\

Formula: Perimeter = a + b + c

Example: A triangle with sides 3 cm, 4 cm, and 5 cm.

  • P = 3 + 4 + 5 = 12 cm

Note: Works for all triangles (equilateral, isosceles, scalene, right, etc.)

Irregular Shapes

For any polygon (multi-sided shape), just add up every side length, even if they're all different.

Example: A pentagon (5 sides) with sides 2, 3, 4, 3, 2 cm.

      ___
     / \
    / \
   | |
    \_____/
  • P = 2 + 3 + 4 + 3 + 2 = 14 cm

General approach:

  1. Identify all sides
  2. Measure or find the length of each
  3. Add them all together

Regular Polygons

A regular polygon has all sides equal and all angles equal.

Formula: P = n × s

Where:

  • n = number of sides
  • s = length of one side

Examples:

  • Regular hexagon (6 sides) with side 5 cm: P = 6 × 5 = 30 cm
  • Regular octagon (8 sides) with side 3 cm: P = 8 × 3 = 24 cm

Units Matter

Perimeter is a length measurement, so it uses length units:

Metric: millimeters (mm), centimeters (cm), meters (m), kilometers (km)

Imperial: inches (in), feet (ft), yards (yd), miles (mi)

Important: Always include the unit in your answer!

If the sides are given in different units, convert them to the same unit before adding.

Example: A rectangle with length 2 m and width 50 cm

Step 1: Convert to same unit

  • 2 m = 200 cm

Step 2: Calculate

  • P = 2(200 + 50) = 2 × 250 = 500 cm or 5 m

Finding a Missing Side

Sometimes you know the perimeter and need to find a missing side length.

Example: A rectangle has perimeter 30 cm and width 5 cm. Find the length.

Formula: P = 2(l + w)

Substitute: 30 = 2(l + 5)

Solve:

  • 30 = 2l + 10
  • 20 = 2l
  • l = 10 cm

Answer: Length is 10 cm

Check: P = 2(10 + 5) = 2 × 15 = 30

Real-Life Applications

Construction: "How much trim do I need for the baseboard around this room?"

  • Measure perimeter of the room

Fencing: "How much fencing to enclose this rectangular garden?"

  • Calculate perimeter: P = 2(length + width)

Running track: "How far is one lap around the field?"

  • The perimeter of the field

Picture frame: "How much wood molding do I need?"

  • Perimeter of the picture

Garden border: "How many feet of edging stones?"

  • Perimeter of the garden bed

Perimeter vs. Area (Preview)

Perimeter: Distance around the shape (1-dimensional)

  • Units: cm, m, ft, etc.
  • Measures the boundary

Area: Space inside the shape (2-dimensional)

  • Units: cm², m², ft², etc.
  • Measures the surface

Important: Two shapes can have the same perimeter but different areas, and vice versa!

Example:

  • Rectangle 1: 5×3, P=16, A=15
  • Rectangle 2: 6×2, P=16, A=12
  • Same perimeter, different areas!

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1: Forgetting to add all sides

❌ Rectangle perimeter = length + width (missing two sides!) ✓ Rectangle perimeter = 2 × length + 2 × width

Mistake 2: Mixing up perimeter and area

❌ Using perimeter formula for area problem ✓ Check: perimeter = distance around, area = space inside

Mistake 3: Forgetting units

❌ "The perimeter is 24" ✓ "The perimeter is 24 cm"

Mistake 4: Not converting units

❌ Adding 2 m + 50 cm = 52 (wrong units!) ✓ Convert first: 2 m = 200 cm, then 200 + 50 = 250 cm

Tips for Success

Tip 1: Draw the shape and label all sides

Tip 2: For rectangles and squares, use the shortcut formulas

Tip 3: Always include units in your answer

Tip 4: Double-check you've added ALL the sides

Tip 5: If sides are in different units, convert them first
