What is a Calendar?

A calendar is a chart that shows all the days in a month or year.

Think about it like this: A calendar helps you keep track of what day it is, when special events happen, and how much time until something you're excited about!

Days of the Week

There are 7 days in a week, and they always go in the same order:

  1. Sunday
  2. Monday
  3. Tuesday
  4. Wednesday
  5. Thursday
  6. Friday
  7. Saturday

After Saturday, it starts over with Sunday again.

Tip: Most calendars show Sunday or Monday as the first day of the week.

Months of the Year

There are 12 months in a year:

  1. January (31 days)
  2. February (28 days, or 29 in a leap year)
  3. March (31 days)
  4. April (30 days)
  5. May (31 days)
  6. June (30 days)
  7. July (31 days)
  8. August (31 days)
  9. September (30 days)
  10. October (31 days)
  11. November (30 days)
  12. December (31 days)

Memory trick for days in each month:

"30 days has September, April, June, and November. All the rest have 31, Except February alone, Which has 28 days clear, And 29 in each leap year."

Reading a Calendar

A calendar grid looks like this:

March 2026

SunMonTueWedThuFriSat
1234567
891011121314
15161718192021
22232425262728
293031

Questions you can answer:

  • What day is March 15th? → Sunday
  • What date is the third Friday? → March 20th
  • How many days are in March? → 31 days

Counting Days

How many days from March 5 to March 12?

Count forward: 5 → 6 → 7 → 8 → 9 → 10 → 11 → 12

That's 7 days (or 1 week).

Special Calendar Words

  • Today — the current day
  • Yesterday — the day before today
  • Tomorrow — the day after today
  • Week — 7 days
  • Fortnight — 2 weeks (14 days)

Understanding Dates

Dates are usually written in one of these formats:

  • March 15, 2026 (month day, year)
  • 15 March 2026 (day month year)
  • 3/15/2026 (month/day/year in the US)
  • 15/3/2026 (day/month/year in many other countries)

Be careful! 3/5/2026 could mean March 5 or May 3 depending on the format!

Leap Years

Most years have 365 days.

Leap years have 366 days (one extra day: February 29).

Rule: A year is a leap year if:

  • It's divisible by 4 (like 2024, 2028)
  • Exception: If it's divisible by 100, it's NOT a leap year (like 1900)
  • Exception to the exception: If it's divisible by 400, it IS a leap year (like 2000)

Examples:

  • 2024 → divisible by 4 → leap year
  • 2025 → not divisible by 4 → not a leap year
  • 2000 → divisible by 400 → leap year
  • 1900 → divisible by 100 but not 400 → not a leap year

Calculating Elapsed Days

Example: How many days from March 10 to March 25?

Method 1: Subtract the dates 25 - 10 = 15 days

Method 2: Count on the calendar 10 → 11 → 12 → ... → 25 (count the steps)

Calculating Days Across Months

Example: How many days from March 28 to April 5?

Step 1: Days left in March after the 28th March has 31 days → 31 - 28 = 3 days (March 29, 30, 31)

Step 2: Days into April 5 days (April 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

Total: 3 + 5 = 8 days

Day of the Week Patterns

Days of the week repeat every 7 days.

If today is Wednesday, what day is it in 10 days?

Method: 10 ÷ 7 = 1 week + 3 days

1 week from Wednesday is Wednesday. 3 more days: Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

Answer: Saturday

Using Calendars for Planning

Real-life uses:

  • Due dates: "The project is due in 2 weeks."
  • Appointments: "Your dentist appointment is on the 3rd Thursday."
  • Events: "The concert is 12 days away."
  • Age: "How many days until your birthday?"

Weeks and Months in a Year

  • 1 year = 12 months
  • 1 year = 52 weeks (and 1 extra day, or 2 in a leap year)
  • 1 month ≈ 4 weeks (actually ranges from 28–31 days)

Practice

How many days are in the month of April?

If today is Monday, what day will it be in 1 week?

How many days from May 12 to May 20?

Which month has 28 days (or 29 in a leap year)?
