Reading Analog Clocks
Learn to tell time by reading the hour hand and minute hand on a clock face.
For Elementary Students
What is an Analog Clock?
An analog clock is a clock with a round face and moving hands (not a digital clock with numbers).
Think about it like this: The hands on the clock are like arrows pointing to the time!
Parts of a Clock
A clock face has:
- 12 numbers (1 through 12) around the edge
- Hour hand (the short, fat hand) — points to the hour
- Minute hand (the long, thin hand) — points to the minutes
- Sometimes a second hand (very thin, moves fast) — we'll focus on hours and minutes first
The Hour Hand (Short Hand)
The hour hand tells you what hour it is.
- When it points to 3 → it's 3 o'clock (or in the 3 o'clock hour)
- When it points to 7 → it's 7 o'clock (or in the 7 o'clock hour)
Tip: The hour hand moves slowly. It takes 1 full hour to move from one number to the next.
The Minute Hand (Long Hand)
The minute hand tells you how many minutes past the hour.
- When it points straight up at 12 → it's o'clock (0 minutes)
- When it points at 6 → it's 30 minutes (half past)
- When it points at 3 → it's 15 minutes (quarter past)
- When it points at 9 → it's 45 minutes (quarter to the next hour)
Reading Simple Times
Example 1: 3:00 (three o'clock)
- Hour hand points to 3
- Minute hand points to 12
- Time: 3:00 or "three o'clock"
Example 2: 7:30 (seven thirty)
- Hour hand is between 7 and 8 (halfway)
- Minute hand points to 6 (bottom of clock)
- Time: 7:30 or "seven thirty" or "half past seven"
Example 3: 2:15 (two fifteen)
- Hour hand is just past 2 (slightly moved from 2)
- Minute hand points to 3 (right side)
- Time: 2:15 or "two fifteen" or "quarter past two"
Clock Positions (Easy to Remember)
| Minute Hand Points To | Minutes | Also Called |
|---|---|---|
| 12 (top) | :00 | o'clock |
| 3 (right) | :15 | quarter past |
| 6 (bottom) | :30 | half past |
| 9 (left) | :45 | quarter to |

Counting Minutes
Each number on the clock represents 5 minutes when counting minutes.
Starting from 12 (top), count by 5s:
- 12 → 0 minutes
- 1 → 5 minutes
- 2 → 10 minutes
- 3 → 15 minutes
- 4 → 20 minutes
- 5 → 25 minutes
- 6 → 30 minutes
- 7 → 35 minutes
- 8 → 40 minutes
- 9 → 45 minutes
- 10 → 50 minutes
- 11 → 55 minutes
- 12 → 60 minutes (start over)
Example: Minute hand points to 4
4 × 5 = 20 minutes
Reading Exact Minutes
Between each number are 4 small tick marks (on most clocks).
Each tick mark = 1 minute
Example: The minute hand is 2 tick marks past the 7.
- The 7 represents 35 minutes (7 × 5)
- Add 2 more minutes: 35 + 2 = 37 minutes
Time: :37 (37 minutes past the hour)
Understanding the Hour Hand Position
The hour hand doesn't jump from number to number. It moves gradually.
At 3:00 → hour hand points exactly at 3 At 3:30 → hour hand is halfway between 3 and 4 At 3:45 → hour hand is almost at 4 (but still in the 3 o'clock hour!)
Important: If the hour hand is between 5 and 6, the hour is still 5, not 6 yet!
Reading Any Time
Example:
- Hour hand: between 8 and 9 (closer to 9)
- Minute hand: pointing at 10
Step 1: Identify the hour The hour hand hasn't reached 9 yet, so it's still 8 o'clock.
Step 2: Count the minutes
Minute hand at 10 → 10 × 5 = 50 minutes
Time: 8:50 (eight fifty) or "ten minutes to nine"
Special Time Phrases
| Time | Also Said As |
|---|---|
| 3:15 | Quarter past 3 |
| 3:30 | Half past 3 |
| 3:45 | Quarter to 4 (15 minutes before 4) |
| 3:50 | Ten to 4 (10 minutes before 4) |
From Analog to Digital
Analog: Hands on a clock face Digital: Numbers like 3:45
They show the same time, just displayed differently!
Practice Tip
Draw your own clock faces and practice:
- Draw where the hands should be for 2:30
- Draw 6:15
- Draw 11:45
This helps you understand how the hands move!
Practice
If the hour hand points to 5 and the minute hand points to 12, what time is it?
When the minute hand points to 6, how many minutes past the hour is it?
The hour hand is between 3 and 4, and the minute hand points to 3. What time is it?
What do we call 7:30?
